LOCATION OF MATSU SHO AN
Matsu Sho An is located in an old and established district, in a prime area of Kyoto that is easily accessible by taxis and subway trains. It is in close proximity to Kyoto Imperial Palace and major tourist and shopping attractions. The area is steeped in 700 years of history, with many important temples and shrines located nearby.
The house is ideally and centrally located in the heart of Kyoto. It is a less than a 20-metre walk to the shopping area along Teramachi Street, which links to the shopping precinct of Teramachi and Shinkyogku Shopping Arcades, and to the shopping areas of Karawamachi and Shijo Streets.
The house is one street away from Teramachi Street and Ebisugawa Street where there are many antiques and retail shops, as well as trendy Japanese and European restaurants, with old-time shops where artisans and craftsmen are still working in traditional art forms, in tatami and furniture making. Teramachi Street is a charming street, filled with antique shops, specialty shops and cafes/restaurants.
The nearest subway station, Marutamachi Station on the Karasuma Line (fast and direct subway access to Kyoto Station), is a 10-minute walk away, and Matsu Sho An is a 5-minute walk to Kyoto-Shiyakusho-mae on the Tozai Line.
HOW TO GET TO MATSU SHO AN
By Taxi
If you are taking the taxi, please tell the driver to drop at the traffic light junction at the corner of Teramachi and Takeyamachi-dori. Most taxi drivers know where Teramachi dori is, and the cross street of Teramachi and Takeyamachi dori is south of Marutamachi-dori, which is another well-known street to most taxi drivers.
Once you alight at the corner of Teramachi and Takeyamachi-dori, if you face north, there will be a temple entrance on your right side at the intersection. The name of the temple is Gyoganji Temple. Walk down the street on the west side that is perpendicular to the temple. This is Takeyamachi-dori, and Matsu Sho An will be the 5th house on the left.
The taxi ride is about 10-15 minutes from Kyoto Station, and costs about 1,500 – 2,000 yen depending on traffic and time of day. You can print a map of the house and bring it to show the taxi driver should you feel a need to do so.
By Subway
If you are taking the subway from Kyoto Station to Matsu Sho An, please take the Karasuma Subway Line and stop at Marutamachi Station (K07). Once you alight, walk past the exit barrier towards Exit 5 where you can take the elevator to the First Floor. On the First Floor, look for the Takeyamachi Dori street sign. Takeyamachi Dori is the side street on the left hand side of the elevator (if you face the street). You will have to do a 180-degree turn, so that you can walk down Takeyamachi Dori, heading east.
The walk to Matsu Sho An will take about 10 minutes. Closer to the house, you will be able to see a temple at the end of the street. The name of the temple is Gyoganji Temple.
The house is about 20 metres from the temple, on the right hand side of the street.
